What a book of leaf actually holds, what that makes of the price, and the area you cannot measure with a rule
Two of the calculators on this site disagree with each other by 23%. The Gold Leaf Thickness Calculator is real physics and its note calls genuine leaf roughly 0.1 micron; the Leaf Sheet Coverage Calculator is geometry, and 25 sheets of 3-3/8in square is 1.98 square feet to a book. Put one book's gold through the first at 0.1 micron and it reports 2.44 square feet — more ground than a book physically is. What settles it is already printed on your supplier's product page and on the invoice: gram weight, the mass of 1,000 leaves. It gives the real thickness, the gold actually in a book, and therefore what fraction of the price is metal and what fraction is beating. No calculator here asks for it. The pack also fixes the two places a leaf order goes wrong before any of that matters: the waste allowance, which is mostly the overlap you were already paying and is a step rather than a slope because leaf is sold in whole books, and the area, which is the developed surface over the profile and not the flat outline a rule gives you.
