Every calculator on BlowFuel asks for one MPG and one energy price, and none says which. A car that does 18 MPG in town and 36 on the highway feels like a 27 MPG car, but over equal miles it is a 24 MPG car, because fuel is gallons per mile: at 12,000 miles and $3.50 a gallon a budget built on 27 is $194.44 a year short. Our fuel economy comparison sets MPG figures side by side, though 24 to 30 MPG saves 100 gallons a year and 40 to 50 saves only 60. Our EV vs gas calculator takes one electricity price and a kWh figure without saying whether it counts charging losses. This kit puts the right numbers into the tools in the right order (all figures are examples). It measures real MPG from a fill-up log, compares cars in gallons per 100 miles, prices the mile at a dated price, and puts a household's long miles on its efficient car, worth $194.44 a year in the example. For an EV it converts a dashboard reading of 3.5 miles per kWh into 32.47 kWh per 100 miles from the wall, blends home and public charging into $0.216 a kWh, and finds the $0.359 rate where the EV stops being cheaper than a 30 MPG car. Then it sets the premium against the saving: $2,500 for a hybrid repays in 4.8 years; $6,000 for the EV needs 10.7 years on that blend, or 7.4 charging only at home. It names no vehicle and recommends none, quotes no current price, and describes no tax credit or rebate: every price is yours, written with its date, and an incentive counts only if you have it in writing. While writing it we fixed our comparison tools, which declared a car with a blank MPG the cheaper one, and our price boxes, which flagged a $3.599 pump price as invalid.
