The Hours Sheet
Your loan, your upkeep and your fuel added together, then divided by the one number that decides whether any of it was worth it
This site works out your loan payment. It works out your annual upkeep — slip fees, insurance, winterization, the maintenance rule. It works out the fuel for a trip. It never adds the three together, and it never divides by the hours you actually go out. On the $65,000 boat worked through this pack, the loan costs $5,785 a year and keeping the boat costs $12,050 before a drop of fuel goes in it. The part every buyer negotiates is the smaller part. Put a season against the total and the figure nobody quotes appears: $1,866 an hour at ten hours a year, $439 at fifty, $172 at two hundred. The pack also settles a contradiction this site carries. The maintenance calculator budgets 10% of the boat's value a year, and its own note says older boats and saltwater use trend higher. Value falls, so the rule budgets $6,500 in year one and $2,023 in year fifteen — least, exactly when the tool says upkeep is worst. Two defensible fixes are given, and the pack does not pretend to know which is yours. Every figure is computed from this site's own calculator modules, so the pack cannot disagree with the tool it sits beside. Nothing here is a quote, a valuation, or advice about a particular purchase.
What’s inside
- The annual cost of a boat, line by line, and the loan's real share of it — usually about a quarter
- What an hour on the water costs, across seven seasons from a fortnight's use to every weekend
- Why the site's 10%-of-value maintenance rule budgets least exactly when its own note says upkeep is worst
- Two defensible ways to correct that rule, with the percentage each one actually implies
- The break-even against renting the same afternoon, at four rental rates — and when there is no break-even at all
- Every lever you control, ranked by what it is worth a year: the APR everybody shops is the smallest
- An honest page on where the pack's own argument stops being right, including the input you will get wrong
- What to settle before you sign: the term, the slip, and what the arithmetic does not decide
- A fill-in sheet — twelve inputs, eleven of which you already have, and the order to work them in
Run one of the free calculators first and buy from that page, and this sheet is computed from your own figures. Buy from here and the pack still arrives complete — the sheet simply has no numbers of yours to work from yet.
