What you must charge an hour, which steel is really cheapest, and how much overrun a fixed price survives
Three questions a welding calculator cannot ask. What to charge: the hourly rate most shops use was inherited or copied, and spreading costs across hours you cannot sell produces a comfortable, competitive number that loses money on a full order book — on the worked shop the shortfall is 61,716 a year. Which steel: a bar is not a unit, and the cheapest quote per metre turns out to be the dearest steel once nesting, minimum orders and scrap are counted. And what a fixed price survives: a 20% margin does not survive a 20% overrun, because cost is most of the price and margin is the remainder.
The comparison that earns the pack: two quotes at a similar price with identical margin percentages, where one tolerates a 24% overrun and the other 100% — because material does not overrun and hours do, and nothing on either invoice says so.
Every table is computed from the same modules behind the calculators on CutAndWeld. No market figures anywhere: no going rates, no typical margins, no steel prices. Every number is your own or off the quotes in front of you. Commercial only — procedure qualification, joint design and inspection are engineering questions this pack does not touch.
What’s inside
The rate you inherited — and the distinction that costs shops money
What an hour actually costs, and the year's shortfall behind the comfortable rate
What the chargeable share is worth, across a range
A bar is not a unit — three steel quotes exactly as they arrive
The same steel normalised to cost per kilogram of finished part
The quote, at the rate the shop actually has to charge
What an overrun does to the margin, at the price already given
Two quotes, same margin, four times the risk
Your own numbers: the ten figures the pack runs on, as a sheet
Before you quote firm — the questions that make a fixed price safe
Plus a second PDF, worked out for you
Run one of the free calculators first and buy from that page, and this sheet is computed from your own figures. Buy from here and the pack still arrives complete — the sheet simply has no numbers of yours to work from yet.
