The Spend Decision Pack
What a class, a coaching package, a new reel or a casting subscription has to do before it pays for itself
Every calculator on CuteAct tells you where you have been: your booking rate, what a headshot returned, what your month cost. This pack is about the decision in front of you, and it starts with the uncomfortable part. The audition tracker divides bookings by auditions and gives you a percentage, and everyone then treats that percentage as a fact about themselves. It is not a fact. It is an estimate from a sample, and at the sample sizes actors actually have it is a very soft one: a single booking in twenty auditions is a 5% rate whose true value plausibly spans under 1% to nearly 24%. That is a twenty-six-fold range, and every spending decision you are offered is argued from the single number in the middle of it. Worse, a range that wide means you could not detect a change in your rate even if you got one — it takes around 822 auditions before a three-point improvement is larger than your own margin of error, and nobody selling you anything will wait that long to be judged. So the pack turns the question round. The site's headshot tool asks how many bookings you attribute to the headshots, which is the one thing nobody can know — handing that input to you does not answer it. Instead: what booking RATE would this purchase have to produce before it broke even? That needs no attribution at all, it is one division, and it applies to a workshop, a reel, a coach or a subscription just as well as to headshots. It is also never the figure quoted by the person selling. Alongside it, the two things an expected return hides. First, how often the purchase returns nothing whatever: bookings are lumpy, and an expected half a booking is not half a job, it is nothing at all most of the time. Second, what your income target actually demands — the day-rate calculator offers 100 billable days as a starting point, but days are not chosen, they fall out of auditions multiplied by your rate multiplied by how long a job runs, and the pack runs it both ways to show how many auditions a week the target really needs. Every figure is computed from the modules behind the site's own calculators. There are no industry averages anywhere in it, no scale minimums, no quoted fees and no success rates, because none of those would be about you — and money carries no currency symbol, because the figures are yours. It ends with a sheet of the eleven lines the whole thing runs on, and if you buy from a calculator page your own figures arrive already worked.
What’s inside
- What your rate is actually worth — the booking rate you quote, as the range it really is
- Why a 26-fold range is the normal result of the sample size actors actually have
- Why the range decides and not the rate — and how many auditions a change would take to see
- Why testimonials cannot be evidence, with the arithmetic that says so
- The question to ask any purchase — the break-even booking rate, which needs no attribution
- The chance of nothing — how often a purchase returns nothing at all, which an average hides
- The same purchase judged across your whole range, where best and worst case disagree
- Billable days are an output of your funnel, not an input you choose
- What your income target actually demands, in auditions per week
- A markup is not a gross-up — why adding 30% then losing 30% leaves you 9% short
- Your own numbers — the eleven lines the pack runs on, and the order to work through them
Run one of the free calculators first and buy from that page, and this sheet is computed from your own figures. Buy from here and the pack still arrives complete — the sheet simply has no numbers of yours to work from yet.
