The Skillet Rescue Plan
Match the method to the rust, strip to bare iron safely, pick an oil that clears the oven, measure each coat to your pan, and set the coats out by evening
IronHearth's free calculators each answer one question about a rusty skillet. The Rust Removal Planner ends at a number of coats; the seasoning oil and oven calculators each ask for a number of coats and never learn where it came from; and the servings calculator sizes a pan without ever meeting the rusty one you own. Writing this plan, we also found the oven calculator baking flaxseed 175 F over its smoke point while promising no smoke, and fixed it. The Skillet Rescue Plan puts them in order. The rust decides the method and the coats, the pan decides the oil for each coat, the oil decides the oven and whether it will smoke, and the coats decide the evenings. On the worked example, a 12-inch skillet with heavy rust, a short vinegar soak and 3 coats is 7 hours from rust to reseasoned; electrolysis on the same pan is 14 hours, with a fourth coat. Every coat for that pan takes 6.79 mL of oil, about 1.38 teaspoons, wiped almost dry. Every figure is computed by the site's own calculators, and the worked numbers are examples tagged as such. The plan adds the fire and chemical steps the free tools lacked: ventilation, never water on burning oil, oily rags laid flat or soaked in a closed metal can, and gloves, eye protection and the label for any stripping product or electrolysis tank. It is about the pan as equipment and gives no cooking or food advice. You get a 23-page printable PDF with a rescue log, a seasoning session sheet and a household pan lineup, plus a personalised sheet worked out from the figures you entered in the calculator.
