Our Gold Karat Converter tells you purity, not price, and sends you to our melt value calculator, which wants grams and a price per gram. Gold is priced per troy ounce, a kitchen scale reads a smaller ounce, a drawer of old jewelry can hold four karats at once, and a ring with a stone is weighed as if the stone were gold. The three tools never meet. The kit puts them in order. It sets aside anything that may be worth more than its metal, reads every stamp (gold-filled and plated marks included), sorts the gold into one lot per karat, weighs in grams, takes the stones off, prices a gram of each karat from the spot price, and reads every offer as a share of your own melt figure.
