Compost, watering and soil mixes — the decisions the calculators can't make
Compost, sun, watering and soil mixes, with the decisions the calculators leave out. Twelve brown and twelve green materials with the C:N ratios the calculator does not carry, worked blends and the six reasons heaps fail. Then the question every seed packet asks and nothing answers: how much sun the bed actually gets — at 51.5°N a bed two metres from a two-metre fence has no direct midday sun for seven months of the year. Then watering volumes by pot and season, and soil recipes by plant with their pH windows. 10 pages, printable, with a fill-in bed and heap record.
What’s inside
24 compost materials with C:N ratios - the calculator carries ten
What catches people out with each material, which is rarely the ratio

Why a bed that grew well all summer stops in September, and why compost will not fix it
Weekly water split into soakings by soil type
