The Stay-Decluttered Plan

Get a closet, a room or a whole home down to a number you chose and keep it there: a doorway count, a pass sized to the gap, a dated maybe box and a monthly budget for what comes in

TinyMode's One In, One Out Calculator is named for a rule that cannot lower a count: one out for every one in keeps the total exactly where it is. Raise the ratio and the removals wait on purchases, so the faster you buy, the sooner the calculator says you arrive. Its 30-day challenge removes 465 things whatever your gap, and nothing on the site turns what wears out into a number for what may come in. The Stay-Decluttered Plan separates the two jobs. On an example closet of 120 pieces with a target of 100 and 4 new a month, two-out-per-in gets there in 5 months only after 20 new pieces come in ($500 at $25 a piece); a pass sized to the gap is 6 days and buys nothing. Then a budget at the wear-out rate (2.78 a month at a 3-year life) keeps the count, a dated maybe box settles the hesitations, and a price per liter shows when space is worth money and when it is not. Every figure is computed by the site's own calculators and every example is tagged as one. Decluttering is not a treatment for any condition; the pack points to the NHS and the International OCD Foundation on hoarding disorder and diagnoses no one. Donation and resale values are estimates, the IRS lines are quoted and nothing is tax advice; batteries, paint, electronics and medicines go by local rules and take-back options. 24 printable pages with four working pages, plus a personalised sheet worked out from the numbers you enter in the calculators.

What’s inside

The full contents of The Stay-Decluttered Plan: get to your number, stay there, and the working pages

Step 1, The Doorway Count Rule: what you own, the number you want, and what comes in a month, for each category

Step 1: count the door, not just the drawer: what you own, your target, and a 30-day tally of what comes in
Step 2: why one-for-one never lowers a count, and what a ratio rule makes you buy on the way
Step 3: a 1, 2, 3 pass sized to your gap, not a fixed 30 days
Step 4: score the hesitations and give the maybe box a date, judged on the true score
Step 5: a monthly budget for new things at the rate old ones wear out
Step 6: what a liter of your home costs a year, and when that matters
Step 7: out the door within a week: donate, sell, take-back and hazardous-waste routes, with the IRS, EPA and FDA lines quoted
Working pages: doorway count sheet, pass planner, maybe box log, inflow ledger
Reference tables: what a ratio rule buys, the pass for every gap, a year of one box by rent and floor area, and the formulas
A quickstart that closes the before-and-after scores, plus a personalised sheet from your own numbers
