The site's First-Year Baby Cost Estimator adds up a year: each monthly line times twelve, plus the gear, divided by twelve. With its defaults that is $5,220, or $435 a month. No month costs $435. The gear is paid before the baby comes home, the site's own diaper calculator counts 334 diapers in the first month and 213 by the end of the year, and childcare typed in as a monthly amount is counted for all twelve months even when it starts in month four. The First-Year Baby Budget Planner lays the same year out month by month. Part 1 counts the diapers before pricing them (2,921 in year one), puts the gear in month one (for the worked household, month one is $1,835.18 against the $435 average) and starts childcare in the month it starts ($3,600 less than twelve months at $1,200). Part 2 keeps one sealed box ahead, compares price per diaper (one outgrown 198-count box wipes out the bulk saving on the next 12), sizes the monthly set-aside and the starting fund that pay every month on time ($1,335.73 a month plus $499.45 up front), and adds a monthly check-in. Worked figures are examples and rules of thumb are named as such. It is a money and supplies planner only: it never looks for savings in feeding, health, childcare, the car seat or anything a baby sleeps in, and anything about your baby's feeding, sleep, health or safety goes to your pediatrician.
