The Simple Machines Science Fair Workbook

The LeverLab plan from a question to a display board in four weeks

A simple machines project can be a model that shows how a lever works, or an experiment that finds something out. This workbook makes it the second kind. Our free calculators predict what a perfect machine would do, and two of them ask for numbers nobody knows: the pulley calculator wants an efficiency, the ramp calculator a friction coefficient. The experiment measures them. Week 1 chooses one question, predicts the answer with the calculator and builds a safe rig. Week 2 takes three trials of every reading and works out efficiency or friction. Weeks 3 and 4 draw one graph, write an honest conclusion and build the board, with a thirty-second answer for the judge. Worked examples throughout, clearly labelled as example data. For students in about grades 5 to 9, with an adult helping on anything that hangs. With your purchase comes a personalised sheet with the prediction column for your own rig, from the values you enter in the LeverLab calculators.
